The teardown archive

We test mills so buyers know the truth.

Independent testing, published free. We buy popular grain mills at retail and measure what the brochures won't tell you: real noise levels, heat, and whether a normal person can actually service one. Our loyalty is to the buyer, not the brand. No press releases — calipers and a sound meter.

Two teardowns underway.

Findings publish here as they're measured — including real decibel readings, not adjectives.

NutriMill Classic teardown

One of America's best-selling home grain mills, opened up. What's inside the $299 impact mill — motor, milling heads, housing — and an honest accounting of where its noise comes from.

Status: unit sourced. Disassembly and dB measurements coming.

NutriMill Harvest teardown

The stone-burr sibling: bamboo housing, corundum stones, and the adjustment dial everyone argues about. How serviceable is it, really?

Status: unit sourced. Disassembly and dB measurements coming.

How we test

Our ethics, in writing.

Every unit is bought at retail with our own money. We accept no manufacturer samples, sponsorships, or input — from anyone, including our future selves as a manufacturer.

We publish our own measurements and photographs. We never reproduce manuals, schematics, firmware, or proprietary documents. Product names are used only to identify what's on the bench.

And yes — we push machines until something gives. Knowing where a mill fails is the most useful thing a buyer can learn before spending $300.
